Spear SafeR Workshop
The ocean is a dynamic environment, and spearfishing comes with inherent risks, no matter how much you prioritize safety. It's an activity that demands respect for the marine environment and a thorough understanding of your physical limitations. Despite these challenges, spearfishing offers one of the most rewarding and satisfying lifestyle experiences, connecting you deeply with nature.
In this one-day workshop, we delve into the physiological aspects of freediving and how to apply these scientific principles to become safer spearfishers specific to blackouts. We'll explore our bodies' limitations in a controlled setting while learning to dive within our limits. Our focus will be on:
- Understanding the physiology of freediving: We'll discuss in detail the body's response to breath-hold diving, including the mammalian diving reflex and the role of oxygen and carbon dioxide concerning the different types of blackouts.
- Developing safer diving practices: We'll collectively come up with safer practices that apply to your spearfishing style, location, and current situation.
- Improving breath-holding techniques: We'll explore various breathing exercises and relaxation techniques to progress your breath-hold capacity safely.
- Recognising and responding to blackouts: Gain an in-depth understanding of the causes of blackouts, recognise early and late signs and symptoms, and how to effectively perform rescue techniques.
Workshop Format:
- Land-Based Session (3-4 hours): In-depth discussion of freediving physiology, safety protocols, and emergency response.
- Pool Practical Session (3 hours): Hands-on practice of breathing techniques and diving skills in a controlled environment.
